While most people (at least here in WV) know that the state was created out of the Civil War, less well-known is the fact that West Virginia was originally funded with money stolen from a Weston, West Virginia bank in 1861. Stop by the site where the great bank robbery that created West Virginia happened in downtown Weston.

Seizure of Weston Bank Funds Highway Historical Marker
On the morning of June 30, 1861, federal troops from the Seventh Ohio Infantry entered the town of Weston, Virginia (now West Virginia) and seized the approximately $30,000 in gold held in the town’s branch of the Exchange Bank of Virginia for construction of the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.
